Monocrystalline silicon is an infrared material with excellent comprehensive cost performance. It can be divided into transmission grade and mirror grade. As a transmission grade material, optical grade Czochralski silicon (OCZ SI) is widely used in the mid infrared (1-6um) band, with an infrared transmittance of more than 50%. Zone fused monocrystalline silicon can be used in wider band (1-14um), and high-purity zone fused monocrystalline silicon (hpfz SI) can even be used in far-infrared band (greater than 30um).
Silicon single crystal is also an excellent laser mirror material. Compared with other mirror materials such as copper and molybdenum, silicon single crystal is currently the preferred substrate material for CO2 laser mirror because of its good thermal conductivity, excellent thermal stability, low coefficient of thermal expansion, relatively low density, low cost and easy precision processing.

Example with BK7 material:These N-BK7 biconvex lenses are available uncoated or with one of five antireflection coatings (-A, -AB, -B, -C, or -D), which reduces the amount of light reflected from each surface of the lens (see the Selection Guide table below for coating option). Since approximately 4% of the incident light is reflected at each surface of an uncoated substrate, the application of an AR coating improves transmission, which is important in low-light applications, and prevents the undesirable effects (e.g., ghost images) associated with multiple reflections. Having optics that are AR coated on both surfaces is particularly desirable for applications utilizing multiple optical elements. Please see the Graphs tab for additional coating information.
